Server turned into bathroom vanity

When planning our new home we wanted to go as “green” as possible.  This means lots of repurposed and vintage.  We were on the lookout for a server or sideboard we could make into a master bath vanity.  We found one that was close to perfect, it wasn’t a fine antique so we could cut, paint etc.  I don’t have a before pic, I did but I can’t find it!  What we did (mostly Rick) was cut the legs so the piece would be vanity height, cut a hole for the sink, replace the hardware and paint it glossy black.  I am so happy with how it turned out!

  1. Wow, this is gorgeous! and what a great idea. I just bought an antique sideboard at a thrift store. I don’t know why I just love old pieces like that. I always wonder who were the owners, what they were like, what kind of a house did the piece live in…etc. We are in the process of looking for a house to buy and I would love to do something like what you did! Thanks for the inspiration :)

    • I am really happy with how the vanity turned out. And I totally agree about old pieces, they have “soul” and carry with them an intriguing mystery. Good luck with your house search!

  2. Hi Jayne,
I love shopping for old furniture to re purpose ! Every old thing was made at a time when the world had higher quality standards even back then for mass produced furniture, it was built to last a life time and more, unlike today’s throw away society. So glad that you like to do this, the vanity looks great would love to see with the sink in it. I just think what you have done looks so rich and expensive, yet I am sure you do it on a budget but the look is fantastic!

    • Hi there and thank you! I sure do have a budget and I really feel vintage/antique pieces are made better, of better quality materials and to me they have a “soul” maybe from all the people that have used it before me. I even have some baskets that are at least 150 years old that are still going strong! I say this because I know you make the most beautiful heirloom baskets!!! I will take some pictures of the vanity and other stuff around my house when I do an update post ;)

  3. I love it. It’s beautiful. The black paint gives it a classy look.

  4. Awesome! Husband and I are getting ready to redo our bathroom (old house, one bathroom—gotta get all your ducks in a row before you start!), and like you, we decided that the more sustainable and more economical option would be to repurpose another piece of furniture. This just totally confirmed my hopes for the project. I LOVE how yours turned out! Brilliant.

  5. This is fantastic! I just refinished a dresser for our bedroom and have yet to decide on pulls/knobs so there it sits, full of clothes and the drawers half open so i can get stuff out. :) Where did you get the pulls for your vanity?

    • Hi Thanks! We got the pulls at Anthropologie. I needed something that was a bit unusual with a touch of gold to tie in with the antique gold mirror we have over the vanity.
